Es ist noch früh am Morgen.

It‘s still early in the morning.

Aber dort galoppiert schon jemand über die Wiese.

But someone is already galloping across the meadows.

Es ist Danny! Und er reitet unser neues Pferd, Belle La Bête. Ja! Unser drittes Rennpferd!

It‘s Danny! And he is riding our new horse, Belle La Bête. Yes! Our third race horse.

Die beiden scheinen gut zusammen zu passen. Sie sehen sehr entspannt aus.

This team seems a good match. They both look relaxed.

Ich habe eine gute und eine schlechte Nachricht für die Cousins in Roropo, sagt Danny. Die gute: Ihr hattet mir versprochen, dass ich euren Don Alfonso fürs Große Rennen ausleihen darf. Aber jetzt gibt es bei euch so viele gute Reiter, und bei uns ein weiteres gutes Pferd. Don Alfonso soll sich einen von euch aussuchen! Ich reite Belle.

I‘ve got good news and bad news for the cousins at Roropo, Danny says. The good news: you had promised me I could borrow your Don Alfonso for the Big Race. But now you are so many good riders, and wa have another good horse. So Don Alfonso should choose one of you ashis rider! I‘ll ride Belle.

Die schlechte Nachricht? Na – das heißt noch nicht dass ihr gewinnt. Belle sieht nicht besonders schnell aus. Aber sie ist es!

The bad news? Well – that doesn‘t yet mean you‘ll win. Belle doesn‘t look very fast – but she is!

Eine Frage der Perspektive / A matter of perspective

 

Pippa und Frankie treffen sich im Garten.

Pippa and Frankie meet in the garden.

Du hast im Wald auch ein Wildschwein gesehen? fragt Frankie.

You, too, have seen a boar in the forest?, Frankie asks.

Meins war riesig! Und es kam sehr nah! Die frechen Dackel hatten es aufgestöbert. Ich hatte Glück dass nichts passiert ist.

Mine was huge! And it came so close! The cheeky dachshunds had rounded it up. I was lucky nothing happened.

 

Meins war eher klein. Und so niedlich! Und ziemlich zutraulich. Ich glaube es hatte gar keine Angst.

Mine was quite small. And so cute! And pretty trusting. I believe it wasn‘t scared at all.

Meine beiden Steiff Wildschweine. Ich sehe keinen Größenunterschied…. Vom Pferd aus scheint manches kleiner als zu Fuß!

Wild beobachten / Watching wildlife

 

Pippa ist so pferdeverrückt wie ein Mädchen es nur sein kann.

Pippa is as horse crazy as a girl can be.

Deshalb ist sie schon früh am Morgen mit Fifty im Wald unterwegs. Endlich scheint die Sonne!

So she is early in the morning on her way in the forest with Fifty. The sun is shining at last!

Sie sieht eine Bewegung.

She spots a movement.

Ein Wildschwein! Es nimmt keine Notiz. Vielleicht hält es das Pferd für harmlos.

A boar! It doesn‘t take notice. Maybe it believes the horse is harmless.

Auch Fifty bleibt ruhig. Er weiß dass er einem Wildschwein mühelos davon rennen könnte.

Fifty is undisturbed, too. He knows he could outrun a boar effortlessly.

Hey Schweinchen, sagt Pippa.

Hey, Piggy, Pippa says.

Es schaut sie an.

It looks at her.

Aber es macht sich immer noch keine Sorgen. Es grunzt, ein bisschen gelangweilt.

But it still doesn‘t seem worried. It grunts, a little bored.

Tolles Erlebnis, denkt Pippa. Dafür lohnt sich frühes Aufstehen!

Great experience, Pippa thinks. So early rising is worth it!

Unheimliche Begegnung / Close encounter

Frankie hat es nicht so mit Pferden. Stattdessen macht er einen Waldspaziergang mit den Dackeln.

Frankie is not the most horse loving kid. Instead, he goes for a walk through the forest with the dachshunds.

Die beiden folgen prima, seit Felix so oft mit ihnen übt. Frankie denkt, dann braucht er keine Leine.

They both are very good since Felix started training them very frequently. So Frankie thinks he doesn‘t need a leash.

 

Großer Fehler! Die beiden haben etwas gehört oder gerochen – und flitzen los!

Big mistake! They noticed a sound – or a scent – and are darting away!

Da hilft kein Rufen.

Calling them doesn‘t do any good.

Bazille und Bazi verschwinden im Unterholz.

Bazille and Bazi vanish in the undergrowth.

Nichts mehr zu sehen von den frechen Dackeln. Selbst ihr Gebell in der Ferne ist fast nicht mehr zu hören. Aber, Moment, da drüben raschelt doch etwas?

No trace to see of the cheeky dachshunds. Even their barking, far away, is almost too faint to hear. But, wait, wasn‘t this some rustling over there?

Oh! Es raschelt – aber das ist kein Dackel!

Oh! Yes it‘s rustling – but this is not a dachshund!

Frankie hat gehört, Wildschweine würden nicht angreifen, wenn man sich ruhig verhält und nicht direkt hin schaut.

Frankie heard a boar won‘t attack as long as you stay very quiet and don‘t look at it straightly.

Ich schau woanders hin…. ich seh dich nicht…. aber auch das Wildschwein guckt sehr betont woanders hin!

I‘m looking somwhere else… I don‘t see you…. but the boar, too, is pretty pointedly looking somewhere else.

Jetzt hat es wieder Deckung erreicht. Noch ein Grunzen, und es verschwindet ohne sich noch mal umzudrehen. Uff!

Now it reached cover again. Another grunt, and it vanishes without looking back. Phew!

Erst jetzt merkt Frankie, dass das Gebell wieder näher kommt. Da sind Bazi und Bazille – auf der Spur des Wildschweins. Sie schauen ungläubig. Hast du es denn nicht gefangen? Aber wir haben es genau in deine Richtung getrieben!

This is when Frankie realizes the barking returns swiftly. There are Bazi and Bazille – on the boar‘s tracks. They look at Frankie disbelievingly. Didn‘t you catch it? But we drew it right into your direction!

 

Ihr Lümmel! Gut dass ihr wieder da seid und dass nichts passiert ist! Aber jetzt bleibt ihr bei mir.

You buggers! It‘s good you‘re back, and nothing went wrong. But now you‘ll stay with me!

Der große Tag ist da! Heute wird die Teilnehmerin am Große Rennen gezogen. Aber auf der Terrasse ist es viel zu windig, da würde es alle Lose davon blasen.

The day has come! Today the starter in the Big Race will be drawn. But it‘s too windy on the deck, all the paper slips would get blown away.

Deshalb findet die Ziehung im Wohnzimmer statt. Bina hat von allen Sashas und Gregors Stimmzettel eingesammelt und sie gründlich gemischt.

So the the lots will be drawn in the living room. Bina collected ballots from all Sashas and Gregors and has mixed them thoroughly.

Manipulationen sind ausgeschlossen. Bina ist neutral.

Wozu wir eine zweite Reiterin brauchen? Naja – bis zum Rennen kann ja viel passieren, und noch mal mach ich mir diesen Stress nicht! Felix, Cinni, Diana – sprecht euch ab wegen Training.

What do we need a second rider for? Well – a lot can happen until the day of the race, and I won‘t go to the bother of doing this again! Felix, Cinni, Diana – you‘ll have to arrange training terms.

Im Wiesental / In the meadows

Keiner hat dem Wetter gesagt dass der April noch eine Weile hin ist: eben gab es einen Schneeschauer, jetzt scheint die Sonne.

No one told the weather that April still lies ahead: we just had a flurry of snow, now the sun is shining.

Notso trödelt mit Darsie am Bach entlang. Der führt recht viel Wasser. Und er fließt schnell!

Notso and Darsie take their time passing the brook. It bears quite a lot of water. And it‘s running quickly!

Plötzlich --- was witscht da vorbei?

All of a sudden --- what‘s that whizzing by?

Es ist Cinnamon mit Richthofen! Eben noch da -

It‘s Cinnamon with Richthofen! Now they were here -

- und schon vorbei! Die beiden nehmen Kurs auf den Bach -

- and already gone! They are aiming at the brook -

- und sind hinüber! Und auf und davon.

Pudelclub-Treffen / Poodle club meeting

Die Cousins kommen zu Besuch und bringen ihre drei Pudel mit! Aber das Wetter ist abscheulich – wie gemein.

The cousins come to visit and bring their three poodles. But the weather is frightful – how mean.

Deshalb treffen die Kinder sich im Wintergarten. Hier sieht es aus wie im Pudelclub! Wir haben aber nur einen – dafür sind ein Zwergschnauzer und ein Dackelmix dabei.

That‘s why the kids meet in the conservatory. This looks like the poodle club! We only have one – but we brought a dwarf schnauzer and a dachshund half breed.

Wir sind genug für eine Übungsstunde! Zuerst gehen wir bei Fuß. Cinnamon hat Walli und Tessie, Peter arbeitet mit Mephisto, Clara mit Toby, Ruben mit Fritz und Notso mit Snoby. Bei einigen klappt es ganz gut, andere brauchen mehr Training.

We‘re enough for a training lesson! We start with heelwork. Cinnamon has Walli and Tessie, Peter works with Mephisto, Clara with Toby, Ruben with Fritz, and Notso with Snoby. Some do very well, others need more practising.

Jetzt halten wir, die Hunde sollen sich setzen. Auch Walli! Snoby, beim Sitzen ist der Popo unten.

Now we stop, and the dogs are to sit. You too, Walli! Snoby, when you sit your backside is on the ground.

Jetzt wird es schwieriger! Die Kinder gehen weg, die Hunde bleiben sitzen. Naja Tessie steht eher.

This will be more difficult! The children walk away, the dogs sit and stay. Well, Tessie actually is standing.

 

Die Hunde werden einzeln abgerufen, die anderen müssen weiter warten. Fritz ist der erste. Tessie ist verärgert dass sie noch nicht dran ist.

The dogs are called one by one, the others must remain waiting. Fritz is first. Tessie is upset it‘s not her turn.

Fritz hat das gut gemacht, und auch Cinnamon hat ihre Hunde gerufen. Tessie! Zu mir, nicht zu Fritz!

Fritz did well, and Cinnamon also called her dogs. Tessie! Come to me, not to Fritz!

Mephisto ist immer noch brav, Toby ist aufgestanden und Snoby legt sich hin.

Mephisto still is very good, Toby stood up and Snoby lays down.

Jetzt darf Toby laufen! Da steht auch Mephisto, und Snoby versucht unauffällig auf Notso zu zu rutschen.

Now Toby can come running! Now even Mephisto is standing, and Snoby tries to slide unobtrusively into Notso‘s direction.

Uff! Das war gar nicht so einfach. Zur Erholung dürfen die Hunde spielen, und die Kinder unterhalten sich.

Whew! That was not so easy. As relaxation, the dogs can play while the kids are talking.

Aber lustig war es. Das machen wir bald noch mal.

But it was fun! We‘ll do this again soon.
