Waldfundsachen / Things you find in the forest

Kein Regen am Wochende - Zeit für einen Waldspaziergang!

No rain at the weekend - time for a walk in the forest!

Axel freut sich dass es mal wieder nach draußen geht. In einem kurzärmeligen Hemd!

Axel is happy he can play outside. In a short sleeved shirt!

Ich habe nicht nur für die Mädels genäht, es gab auch zwei Oberhemden. Mortimer hat das andere bekommen.

I didn't sew for the girls only, I also made two boys shirts. Mortimer got the other one.

Im Wald gibt es viel zu entdecken. Zum Beispiel diesen Ast zum drauf klettern.

There's a lot to find in the forest, like this branch to climb on.

Aber deshalb sind wir nicht hier - sondern wegen der interessanten Pflanzen am Boden. Das ist nämlich Bärlauch.

But that's not why we are here. We came for the interesting plants on the ground. It's wood garlic.

Ihr könnt mir beim Zupfen helfen, Jungs. Jungs?

You can help me pick some, boys. Boys?

Was habt ihr denn da gefunden? Eine Schnecke??

What have you got there? A snail??

Nein, es sind ungewöhnliche Pilze. Die sind natürlich wichtiger als der Bärlauch.
Dann muss ich mich wohl selber bücken....

No, it's unusual fungi. They are of course much more important than wood garlic. So I'll have to bend down myself....

  1. That fungi certainly looks like snails, well worth a bend down. Well spotted boys.
BTW.Very smart new shirts that you are wearing.

    1. My husband always gets very nervous when I look too closely at the shirt he is wearing. But used men's shirts make so lovely doll clothes! He even gave me 1m of black gingham cotton for Christmas two years ago, so I would leave his gingham shirt alone. But I use up only the shabby ones, I swear!

    2. That is a great way of getting your husband to buy you some doll clothing fabric - peering at the fine pattern of his shirts until he gets nervous!

    3. Well sometimes he is a little slow - and I have to say things like: "A very nice fabric! Really it would make lovely doll clothes!" THAT makes him nervous for sure!

  2. Lovely to see your kids enjoying the great outdoors.
Wild garlic grows here too - but what do you do with it?

    1. I use it for "Schwäbische Maultaschen" (Swabian ravioli) - it goes into the noodle dough as well as the stuffing. And today I'll make "Bärlauchspätzle"; a sort of noodles that are made from a soft dough cut in thin stripes from a small board into a pot of boiling water and cooked only shortly. The wild garlic gives a lovely colour and a light garlicky aroma.
My son made pesto from it last week, so we still can enjoy it after the plants start to bloom and the leaves get bitter.

  3. Great new shirts Ursula, the boys look very handsome, and it's lovely to be able to wear short sleeves again.
Do you eat the wild garlic, I mean is it edible? We eat a lot of garlic here in Spain, but it is the regular one, but you can find it growing wild here too :)

    1. Yes it is edible when it's (carefully) cooked. It gives a wonderful colour to noodle dough, and it's also delicious in sauces. Sadly, its season is very short. When the blooms are open, it gets bitter.
